Fulham announced the signing of Maarten Stekelenburg for an undisclosed fee on Wednesday 5th June 2013, with the goalkeeper penning a four-year deal.

Born in the Netherlands in Haarlem, Stekelenburg began his youth career in his homeland and joined Ajax Amsterdam when he was 15-years-old, rising up through their youth ranks to the first team.

Stekelenburg made his debut for the club in February 2002 and won his first trophy - the Dutch Super Cup - that same year. He went to make more than 280 appearances during 11 seasons at Ajax, winning the Dutch Eredivisie title twice, as well as three Dutch cups. He was also named the Ajax Player of the Year twice before he moved to AS Roma in August 2011.

The goalkeeper has represented Netherlands at international level more than 50 times and made his senior debut on 3rd September 2004 against Liechtenstein in a 3-0 win. He had previously been capped four times by the Netherlands Under-21 side.

Rising to become first choice for his country after the retirement of Edwin van der Sar in 2008, Stekelenburg played a key role in the side that reached the Final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup - where they narrowly lost out 1-0 to Spain in extra-time - and was also first-choice at the 2012 UEFA European Championships.

A tall, commanding goalkeeper, Stekelenburg made 19 league appearances in his debut season in English football, before joining AS Monaco on a year-long loan ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.

He joined Southampton on a season-long loan on 22nd June 2015.
