Sascha Riether

Defender

Profile

Biography

Fulham signed Sascha Riether on a season-long loan from FC Cologne in early July 2012 in a deal that gave the Whites an option to acquire the player on a permanent basis the following summer.

The Club took up that option at the end of the season, with Riether agreeing a deal that keeps him in SW6 until 30th June 2015, while Fulham has an option to extend the deal by a further year.

The talented right-back, who can also play in midfield, started his senior career at SC Freiburg in 2002 where he made 139 appearances in five seasons before making the move to VfL Wolfsburg in 2007. He spent four seasons there and made 116 appearances, winning the Bundesliga in 2009.

Riether played against Fulham in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League in 2010, before joining Cologne that summer.

Has made two international appearances, making his debut as a second-half substitute in a 2-2 draw against Denmark in August 2010. A month later he made his first start in a Euro 2012 qualifier against Azerbaijan which Germany won 6-1.

Riether surpassed all expectations in his debut season at Fulham, immediately establishing himself as Martin Jol's first-choice right-back following a series of reliable displays. Complementing his workmanlike attitude with impressive attacking instincts and a mean cross, Riether ended the campaign as a real crowd favourite at Craven Cottage - a fact that was emphasised by his third placing in the Club's Player of the Season voting.
