A Moussa Dembẻlẻ brace saw Fulham reach the Semi-Finals of the FA Youth Cup.

A Moussa Dembẻlẻ brace saw Fulham defeat Huddersfield Town in the FA Youth Cup Quarter-Final to reach the Semi-Final stage for the first time in the Club’s history.

Huddersfield had caused Fulham problems early on with several long-range efforts, before Dembẻlẻ, who scored twice in the last round at Manchester City, opened the scoring in the 17th minute when he headed home Dean O’Halloran’s cross.

The Frenchman then doubled Fulham’s advantage just after the hour mark with a superb left-footed half-volley. But the Terriers pulled one back almost immediately when Florent Bojaj slotted home.

Patrick Roberts and George Williams both forced saves from the Town goalkeeper but there were some nervy moments at the other end in the dying moments. Indeed, in the last few seconds, Rekeil Pyke smashed a shot against the bar but Fulham held on to book a two-legged Semi-Final meeting against Reading.

Huddersfield fashioned the first effort of the game in the seventh minute, with Jake Charles working the ball onto his left foot and seeing a curling shot from the edge of the box deflected inches wide of the far post.

At the other end, Terriers captain Joe Wilkinson went into the book a minute later for crudely ending a jinking run by Patrick Roberts, fresh from his involvement in the First Team squad on Saturday. Emerson Hyndman’s subsequent free-kick was hit straight into the defensive wall.

Phillip Billing and Bojaj sent long-range drives wide of the near post, but it was Fulham who took the lead in the 17th minute. A well-worked move saw Williams pass to Hyndman who poked the ball into the path of Dembẻlẻ just outside the area. The Frenchman played it out wide to O’Halloran who sent a cross to the far stick where Dembẻlẻ had peeled away from his marker to head home from just a few yards out.

Charles dragged a shot wide for Town after being found in the box by Bradley Carroll and the visitors should have done better in the 25th minute when they broke three-versus-one from a Fulham free-kick but Billing overplayed his pass and the ball went behind.

Another long-range effort by Huddersfield in the 28th minute – this time from Charles – had Marek Rodàk at full stretch but the shot flew wide of the goalkeeper’s left-hand post.

Dembẻlẻ met an O’Halloran corner in the 36th minute but headed wide from six yards, before Huddersfield penalty claims fell on deaf ears when Danny Kane claimed he was clipped by Jordan Evans.

A fierce Charles drive then whistled just past the far post as Huddersfield kept the pressure on, before a brilliant run by Roberts saw him glide across the park before slipping Evans in down the left. Evans’ cross was just too strong for a stretching O’Halloran to make a purchase on in what was the final action of the first half.

There were no changes by either side at the break and Liam Donnelly made a good block to deny Bojaj in the early stages of the second half, before Roberts drew a save from Sam Guthrie with a low shot.

It was 2-0 to Fulham in the 63rd minute. Roberts picked up the ball in the middle of the park and with nothing on, attempted a chipped pass over the top to Dembẻlẻ which was flicked inadvertently into the striker’s path by Wilkinson. The ball sat up nicely for Dembẻlẻ yet there was still plenty for him to do – but his half-volley from seven yards flew past Guthrie and into the far corner.

Huddersfield quickly reduced the arrears, though, when Charles got free down the left and pulled the ball back to Bojaj who skipped around Rodàk and slotted into an empty net.

Dembele then headed an inviting Ryheem Sheckleford cross over, before Roberts met Williams’ delivery to the far post but saw his effort saved by the feet of Guthrie. In the 78th minute Williams bundled his way into the box but saw his close-range shot brilliantly saved by Guthrie.

Williams was causing the Huddersfield defence all sorts of problems. He controlled a quickly-taken free-kick by Hyndman in the 84th minute and moved inside but saw his right-footed shot cleared off the line by Wilkinson.

Kane went into the book in the 88th minute for a late tackle on Williams and William Boyle was also shown a yellow card for a lunge on Sheckleford.

Huddersfield piled forward in the last few minutes and with virtually the last kick of the game, substitute Pyke collected a loose ball in the area but saw his effort cannon off the crossbar as Fulham held on.
