Fulham Under-18s came from behind to earn a 3-1 victory over Mansfield Town in the Third Round of the FA Youth Cup on Friday afternoon.

The young Whites dominated the opening 45 minutes but found themselves trailing to Nyle Blake’s suckerpunch.

But their heads didn’t drop, and a brace from Michael Elstone after the restart turned the tie around, before Captain Moritz Jenz made sure of progression when he nodded in a free-kick.

Steve Wigley’s side almost went in front inside 30 seconds at Motspur Park. Joe Felix curled a ball down the right flank to Elstone who beat his man and cut the ball back from the byline, but Jayden Harris’ low shot was hacked off the line.

Three minutes later a good run down the right flank from Marlon Fossey ended with him finding Elstone, whose strike was comfortably saved by Xavier Sundby.

Steven Sessegnon then embarked on a dazzling run that saw him waltz beyond half the Mansfield side, but his shot at the end of it was well kept out by Sundby, who denied the Fulham left-back once again 10 minutes later.

Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson and Harris then went close, but it was the Stags who made the breakthrough. A throughball released Zayn Hakeem and he squared to Blake who couldn’t miss from close range.

Felix must have thought he’d equalised shortly before half-time when he met a cross sweetly at the far post with a flying volley, but the impressive Sundby came out on top once again with a strong-handed save.

Fulham flew out of the blocks after the restart, though, and were level inside two minutes courtesy of some excellent play by Elstone. He picked the ball up midway inside his own half, sprinted the length of the pitch, then fired in a left-footed strike which took a deflection to wrong-foot Sundby.

In the 56th minute Sessegnon rifled in a dipping shot which needed to be spooned behind by Sundby, and shortly after substitute Mikolaj Kwietniewski – who was making his first appearance following a spell on the sidelines – sent an effort narrowly over his crossbar.

Just after the hour mark Elstone put his team in front for the first time. Fossey’s free-kick was met by Jenz only for Sundby to pull off a wonderful reaction stop. The ball looked as though it may have crossed the line anyway, but Elstone made sure after Mansfield failed to clear the danger.

Sessegnon was then foiled by Sundby for a third time as the ‘keeper got fingertips to his rasping strike, before Jenz added his name to the scoresheet with a glancing header from Fossey’s free-kick.

Thorsteinsson then tested with Sundby with a free-kick of his own, and the goalkeeper got away with one after spilling the set-piece, with Sessegnon then concluding a twisty run with a shot over on the angle.

Ryan De Havilland almost added a fourth in stoppage time when he cracked a rising strike against the angle of post and crossbar, but it mattered little as Fulham booked their place in Round Four, where they’ll travel to Middlesbrough in mid-January.
