A first half onslaught from Chelsea was enough to see them over the line at Cobham in a thrilling South West London derby on Saturday morning.

Abraham's Brace Cancelled Out

Saturday 13 April 2019 12:59

A first half onslaught from Chelsea was enough to see them over the line at Cobham in a thrilling South West London derby on Saturday morning.

Timmy Abraham’s goals in the back-end of each half and Fabio Carvalho’s clever free kick weren’t enough to make the short trip across South West London worthwhile.

Colin Omogbehin reverted to his usual shape and a settled line-up – naming the same back four as the defeat to Brighton. The familiarity of the shape was seemingly paying off as Chelsea struggled to make room in between the lines.

Luca Murphy’s rash challenge presented Chelsea with the chance to open the scoring from the spot. His shove on George Nunn left the referee with no hesitation. Marcel Lewis emphatically dispatched the dead ball from 12-yards.

The Blues doubled their lead with fortunate build up. Henry Lawrence’s cross spun off Connor McAvoy perfectly into the path of Thierno Ballo who put a pull-back on a plate for George Nunn.

The flourishing water fountains and deadly straight pine trees poked up above the stands adjacent to the pitch in Cobham as Armando Broja broke through and shanked wide on his weaker foot. More intricate play followed as Ballo placed a shot into the top corner.

A sniff of a chance was given when Sylvester Jasper’s cross was diverted into the path of Timmy Abraham for the forward to coolly hammer home.

Hilton looked bright all morning as he slalomed through challenges and shave the angle of post and bar.

The handful of those in the gazebo-like stands gasped as Dynel Simeu fell on a cross into the box with his arm which was strongly appealed by those in White asking for a penalty of their own.

The second half saw the lads respond as they have done all season as Ryan De Havilland’s teasing cross was met by sub Terry Ablade for his header to fly over the bar.

Hilton continued to impress in what would have been a goal of the season contender. He watched a ball out of the sky and volleyed towards the top corner before an outstanding fingertip from Tie.

In an even second half The Blues killed the game to strengthen their place in third in the Premier League South. Dion Rankine’s pace provided another tap-in for Nunn.

Ashby-Hammond was called into action with a reflex save to push away Broja’s first time hit.

Carvalho’s strike deflected into the path of Abraham who gobbled up his second and breathed life into the team.

The last kick of the game was a piece of brilliance from Carvalho who bent in a free kick at the near post.  A manic game ending in Chelsea winning a seven-goal thriller.
