A late surge of Arsenal quality saw them put three goals past Fulham and secure the league title on Saturday morning at Motspur Park.

Gunners Secure Silverware

Saturday 27 April 2019 13:04

A late surge of Arsenal quality saw them put three goals past Fulham and secure the league title on Saturday morning at Motspur Park.

Vontae Daley-Campbell, Florian Balogun and Trae Coyle all scored within the final 12 minutes to put a generous gloss on their final game after Fulham had given them many scares.

Arsenal started like a side that knew the league title was on the line. Balogun looked sharp in the channels as Fulham tried to settle into their usual composed game.

Matt Smith combined nicely with those around him to force the first stop from Luca Ashby-Hammond fresh from his clean sheet the previous evening.

Fulham were hunting in packs to seize on loose passes and that was where the biggest chance of the game came from. Sonny Hilton won the ball high and fed Timmy Abraham, but Tom Smith got enough contact on the strike to halt a certain goal.

The Gunners continued to force the issue as a cleverly worked free kick found its way to Coyle who scuffed his shot into the ground.

Abraham was proving a threat with his pace as Fabio Carvalho cut open the visitors to send a shot across, evading the forward by millimetres. Fulham held their own going into the second half.

Ashby-Hammond was in the mood for shot stopping as he prevented a strong effort from Ben Cottrell. Seconds later he was in action again to make another sprawling stop.

Scott Armsworth and Connor McAvoy were doing their bit to prevent Arsenal breaking through with some stern blocks and clearances as the visitors huffed and puffed.

Smith again saw a shot deflected wide as Arsenal began to despair at the resolute Fulham defence. Miguel Azeez found the ball in his path but again a defender was in the way to prevent any opening.

Fortune was on the side of Arsenal as a high boot and handball were waved away as the surprisingly quiet Balogun leaped without enough purchase on his header.

An adjudged handled pass-back had Arsenal nerves jangling as sub Ryan De Havilland clattered one into a wall of bodies from eight yards. Balogun was played in at the other end but his shot was tame, and the rear guard held firm once more entering the final ten minutes.

The visitors piled men forward searching for that decisive goal. Daley-Campbell stayed forward from full back and slotted home the opener to cue premature celebrations.

Balogun found his clinical edge moments later placing an impeccable finish into the lower quadrant.

Coyle put the icing on the cake for The Gunners with an emphatic finish to secure the league title over their bitter rivals Spurs.
