Norwich Battle Back

Saturday 17 August 2019 14:30

Main Action:

Fabio Carvalho rescued a point with a superb free kick in the dying minutes of a manic topsy-turvy game at Norwich’s Colney Training Centre on Saturday afternoon.

Sylvester Jasper and Jay Stansfield had the Young Whites in cruise control before three unanswered Canaries goals meant a first defeat of the season was a strong possibility. Carvalho’s stunner in the last minute salvaged a point.

Jasper was keen to continue his fine form and he was the first to test the hands of Joe Rose in the Norwich goal which made for a comfortable stop. There was a contest developing between the two and Jasper’s fizzing free kick grazed the crossbar leaving Rose stranded.

The battled raged on as the forward was brought down in the area presenting him with the chance to add his third goal in two games. Jasper made no mistake burying it into the side netting. Carvalho, as usual, was picking up dangerous positions between the lines. He linked up with Jasper to force Rose into another save as there looked only one team in the contest.

Carvalho somehow played a one-two with his man to present an enticing shooting opportunity that flew wide.

The newly converted spearhead of the attack in Jasper continued to be a menace to the Norwich defence into the second half. He collected a Stansfield cross and swivelled a shot narrowly wide.

The pressure told moments later as Luca Murphy floated a ball into Stansfield. He is making a name for himself in front of goal as he planted the finish into the corner. The Canaries did find a goal two minutes later. Andrew Omobamdele was free from a wide set piece and he added the finishing touch.

Norwich found a new lease of life from the response and Jasper’s sloppy pass allowed Tom Dickson-Peters to emphatically curl one home. Rose kept out Stansfield twice in quick succession with two world class saves as Fulham continued to carve the hosts apart.

The Canaries continued to be presented with opportunities as a high press forced Luca Ashby-Hammond to surrender the ball and allowed Dickson-Peters to snatch his second to complete the comeback.

Fulham continued to press for another goal, and it took until the final minute to come. Carvalho delivered a trademark free kick into the top corner. An indirect free kick with the final kick of the game following a pass back gave the illusion that Fulham found a winner - but the ball deflected into the side netting.

What That Means:

Brighton and Chelsea overtake the Young Whites following their wins this morning meaning Fulham now sit third. An unbeaten start to the season continued with an enthralling game at the Colney Training Centre.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Jasper’s penalty is his third goal in two league games following his brace against Spurs.
  • Stansfield notched up his second goal in as many games and can count himself unlucky to not have added to that tally.
  • Norwich turned the game on its head after Fulham raced to a 2-0 lead. Carvalho’s free kick salvaged a point which was the least Steve Wigley’s side deserved.
