Fulham slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Athletic Club Bilbao at Motspur Park on Wednesday.

Fulham slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Athletic Club Bilbao at Motspur Park on Wednesday evening.

The Premier League International Cup match was decided by first half goals from Unai Bilbao and Jorge Luis Garcia, although George Williams did pull one back for the Whites early in the second half.

A first half that had begun at a slow tempo almost exploded to life on the quarter hour mark when a delicate flicked one-two between Chris David and Patrick Roberts culminated in the former firing in an effort from 25 yards that whistled narrowly over the bar.

But it was the Basque outfit who went in front with 29 minutes played. Mario Barco connected well with a corner but saw his powerful header brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Marek Rodák, only for Bilbao to get to the loose ball first and nod in.

Things got worse for the Whites four minutes later. Aitor Seguin slipped Garcia into space and the midfielder finished coolly beyond Rodák from a tight angle to make it 2-0.

Fulham looked for a response and Solomon Sambou created an opening when he escaped the attentions of a trio of Bilbao players to bring the ball into their half. It was eventually worked out wide to Jordan Evans who found Moussa Dembélé with his cross, but the Frenchman’s header missed the target.

It could have been three shortly before half-time when Seguin’s deep cross was met by Barco who saw his angled header fly just wide of the far post.

Manager Peter Grant looked to shake things up at the break, introducing striker Adam Taggart in place of midfielder Sambou.

And within minutes of the restart Fulham hauled themselves back into the game. Williams tried his luck from long range and his effort flew into the back of the net via a Bilbao defender.

Just after the hour mark Bilbao made their first change, replacing Garcia with Gorka Guruzeta, while Tom Richards came on for Sean Kavanagh moments later.

On 68 minutes another surging Williams run almost brought an equaliser but his rising shot was palmed over the bar by visiting goalkeeper Alejandro Remiro.

Five minutes later Taggart thought he should have been awarded a penalty when a combination of goalkeeper and defender wiped him out, but a corner was the decision.

Bilbao then made their second change as Seguin made way for Julen Uriguen.

The Whites thought they had another decent penalty shout on 82 minutes when Williams had his legs taken away, but again the referee saw no infringement.

Dembélé then missed a wonderful chance to draw his side level when he got beyond the last defender but Remiro made himself big and smothered his placed effort.

The visitors then made their final change as Asier Etxaburu came on for Ander Alday, before Remiro’s time wasting at a goal-kick earned him a yellow card.

Williams had another speculative effort in the closing stages that wasn’t too far off target, but that was as close at the Whites came to an equaliser.

Their final Group B game sees them host PSV Eindhoven at Motspur Park in January, where a draw would be enough to send the Whites through to the knock-out stages.
