A brace from Josh Walker saw Fulham Under-21s earn a 2-0 victory at Blackburn Rovers on Monday afternoon.

Fulham, who named Marcus Bettinelli in goal for a fourth successive U21 game as his comeback from a serious knee injury continued, got off to a flyer in East Lancashire when they went in front after eight minutes.

When a Blackburn move broke down, Fulham sprang forward. Stephen Humphrys eventually worked the ball to Walker who took a touch before firing a shot across the keeper and in.

Simon Eastwood denied Walker with his legs soon after, before Humphrys fired narrowly over. Josh Smile then limped out of the action and was replaced by Mikolaj Kwietniewski.

Rovers pushed for an equaliser in the second half but were twice denied by fine saves from Bettinelli. Liam Donnelly also impressed in an unfamiliar left-back role, making several important blocks as Peter Grant’s side dug in.

And with 10 minutes left, Fulham did make sure of the victory. A Ryheem Sheckleford cross was met at the front post by Walker and his glancing header went in off the far stick as the Whites sealed the points.

"Marcus got another 90 minutes under his belt," said Grant. "All the young boys did well. It was a good all-round performance, we played really well with and without the ball.

"They put out a strong side so it was a tough game but we more than matched them. Josh Walker hadn't scored for a while but his performances on the training ground have been excellent. I'm a firm believer in what you put in during training will manifest itself in a game and that's exactly what happened."
