Fulham Takes League Cup Holders Liverpool To The Wire
November 1983
In a thrilling series of games and replays, Division Two Fulham held our own against the best team of the 1980s and defending League Cup champions Liverpool. The first two games both ended 1-1, with Kevin Lock netting a penalty for the Whites in each game. In the third game/second replay, it took a mis-hit shot from Graeme Souness in extra-time to settle the issue where the game finished 1-0. Liverpool went on to retain the League Cup that season, but it was Fulham who proved to be their biggest obstacle. Pictured is Lock scoring from the spot at Anfield in the first replay..

Fulham's Baseball Ground Chaos
May 1983
Fulham's return to Division Two saw us rocket up the League table and almost seal promotion to Division One. We were denied by a last day defeat to Derby County that ended in farce. Losing 1-0, and needing a win to guarantee promotion, Derby’s ground was invaded by home fans with 78 seconds left to play and was abandoned. “I will never forget, with about 20 minutes left, having to stand 10 yards onto the pitch to see around the encroaching crowd,” Fulham Manager Malcolm Macdonald said. “We needed a goal as we were 1-0 down, but on the far side Robert Wilson got the ball, turned, and as he did so somebody leapt out of the crowd and smashed their foot across his thigh. It was so off-putting for the players and they never had a fair playing field. Even when the police said the ground had been cleared, the referee wouldn’t take us back out there. We lodged an appeal to have the match replayed, but we lost it and had to stay where we were, which was a great shame.”.
