Fulham began their 2016/17 EFL Cup campaign with a win away to League Two side Leyton Orient on Tuesday night.
Dennis Adeniran’s opener came 29 minutes in to the game when he headed home Sean Kavanagh’s inswinging corner.
In the second half Fulham doubled their lead when six minutes after the break Cauley Woodrow blasted the ball in to the corner from a free-kick. Woodrow then scored his second of the game three minutes later from a difficult angle.
The home side managed to pull one back in the 73rd minute after substitute Paul McCallum headed home, eight minutes before scoring again leaving the visitors nervous.
It was a tense ending for the 1,193 Whites fans who travelled to East London, but they managed to see their side home with a 3-2 victory.
Slaviša Jokanović made 11 changes to the team that beat Newcastle United on Friday night, and gave First Team debuts to four Academy players; Adetayo Edun, Ryan Sessegnon, Luca de la Torre and Adeniran.
Just under a minute in and Fulham had the first chance of the game. De la Torre found the feet of Edun on the left hand side who crossed in, but Liam Kelly managed to clear it for a corner.
There was a fine bit of play by the Whites in the 11th minute when Lasse Vigen Christensen found de la Torre whose cross was put out for a corner by Callum Kennedy. Kavanagh’s resulting corner found Scott Parker who could only blast it straight at the keeper.
The home side had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock in the 15th minute when Harry Cornick’s fierce right footed shot scraped just wide of Jesse Joronen’s goal.
Fulham immediately attacked and Christensen tried to place a cross in to de la Torre but missed his target by inches.
Orient had their best chance to convert in the 21st minute. Ollie Palmer managed to lose Sessegnon on the right before driving a low cross inside the penalty area to Massey, whose shot found its way to Sandro Semedo but was well blocked by Kavanagh.
The visitors managed to break the deadlock in the 29th minute when Adeniran expertly glanced the ball into the back of the net. Kavanagh’s inswinging corner found the youngster who headed home his first goal for the club. The debutant's emphatic celebration saw him head straight for the away crowd and in doing so he received a yellow card.
Fulham continued to push and in the 38th minute Scott Parker lofted a high ball forwards which found the feet of the pacey Sessegnon. The left-back did well to cross in to the box but it was just too high for Woodrow to connect. The ball eventually found its way to Kavanagh who attempted a shot from just outside the penalty area only for it to end up over the bar.
Two minutes later the home side had another chance, after Palmer worked his way in to the box to find Kelly but Joronen was well placed to make a fantastic reaction save.
The Whites doubled their lead in the 51st minute after Edun won a free-kick 35 yards from goal as a result of a foul by Massey. Parker laid off the free-kick to Woodrow who buried it in to the top right corner of the net – a beautiful finish.
Woodrow wasn’t happy with just the one goal and three minutes later he managed to get his second of the game. The young striker managed to lose Pollock on the left hand side before running the ball into the area and coolly slotting home to make it 3-0.
The away side played a beautiful bit of possession football in the 62nd minute, having managed to work the ball forward to just outside the box. However, Parker’s shot ended up over the crossbar.
Woodrow was close to completing his hat-trick in the 68th minute. De la Torre lost the ball just outside the penalty area, but Woodrow was there to pounce and hit it first time. Unfortunately for him his shot was comfortably saved by Sam Sargeant.
Orient managed to find the net in the 73rd minute. Substitute Dean Cox’s corner found McCallum who headed in despite the ball hitting Edun during its course to goal.
The hosts challenged again and five minutes later Massey managed to find Palmer whose shot was well saved at the near post by Joronen.
The O's managed to bring the game back to 3-2 nine minutes from time when Cox whipped in a beautiful cross towards McCallum who headed home his second of the game.
Five minutes from time, and despite plenty of pressure from the home side, Fulham almost extended their lead when Kavanagh found Woodrow whose shot was well blocked by Yvab Erichot.
With the last kick of the game Orient came close again when Massey managed to find Cox only for the substitute to volley straight at Joronen. As soon as the Whites keeper stood up the final whistle was blown by Mr. Davies, and the 3-2 result sees Fulham through to the next round of the EFL Cup.
