Good form continued as Fulham marched to victory against Cardiff City on Friday night.

Good form continued as Fulham marched to victory against Cardiff City on Friday night.

A quality first-half penalty from the returning Aleksandar Mitrović was supplemented by another Josh Onomah slammer as we made it four wins in a row.

There was a fresh look to the Fulham line-up with a trio of changes from the impressive victory against Nottingham Forest prior. Neeskens Kebano dropped to the bench as Mitrović made a return following his three-match suspension, whist Anthony Knockaert and Cyrus Christie replaced Ivan Cavaleiro and Denis Odoi down the right.

It took until the 9th minute for the first shot of the game. Positive work between Mitrović and Knockaert down the right saw the ball come to Harrison Reed, whose speculative left-footed shot from 25 yards was comfortable for Alex Smithies in the Cardiff net.

Fulham were largely in control of possession early on but lacking sharpness in the final pass. However, loose play at the back saw Cardiff break away in the 18th minute through Nathanial Mendez-Laing. His shot was adjudged to have been blocked by the arm of Knockaert, with the resulting free kick coming to naught.

A few minutes later and Mendez-Laing was in again down the right, requiring a smart stop from Marek Rodák to keep out his front post blast.

The early scares seemed to awaken Fulham, who started bringing the game to the Bluebirds predominantly down the right. Christie, Reed and Knockaert were linking well, but couldn’t quite find a way through the defence who stood firm.

In the 34th minute Fulham were awarded a penalty. Knockaert and Christie combined again down the right, with the latter floating in a cross towards Mitrović who was clearly tugged back. The returning front man stepped up to take it, finishing emphatically into the top right for his first goal since the restart.

It was then time for a frantic few minutes as both teams hit the crossbar in quick succession. First, Joe Ralls’ half volley from the edge of the 18-yard box looped onto the Fulham bar as Cardiff searched for an equaliser.

Straight down the other end Bobby De Cordova-Reid went for top bins placement from 30 yards in what would’ve been a beauty but for the fingertips of Smithies, who did brilliantly to tip it onto the woodwork.

De Cordova-Reid went close again moments later. Knockaert, who had switched the left, was still causing trouble for Neil Harris’ side. He did well to find a yard before delivering into the danger area, but De Cordova-Reid’s glancing header went wide as Mitrović was lurking behind him.

The first change for Fulham came just shy of the hour mark, as Stefan Johansen came on for Harry Arter.

A quick throw out from Rodák set Joe Bryan clear down the left, who carried it upfield before whipping in a threatening cross. The Cardiff defence smothered it as Mitrović beckoned, with firm suspicions of a handball being waved away by the referee.

Fulham got their second after 66 minutes. From a throw-in the ball was tapped about between substitute Johansen and Onomah, before Onomah rifled a shot across goal into the far-left corner giving a cushion to Scott Parker’s side.

There should’ve been a third minutes later. Bryan’s delivery was again on-point, this time from a free kick, but the pace meant Christie couldn’t keep his header down from 6 yards out.

A double change saw freshness down the wings after 78 minutes, as Kebano and Cavaleiro swapped with De Cordova-Reid and Knockaert.

Parker made use of all five changes as Steven Sessegnon and Kevin McDonald came on to steady the ship in the last five minutes.

Kebano had a massive chance with a free header from close range after Cavaleiro had danced down the left and chipped a cross in, but his connection wasn’t the cleanest allowing Smithies to claim.

In the end it was another professional display from Fulham who will look to keep the momentum going at West Brom on Tuesday.
