A terrific night for Aleksandar Mitrović saw him win the opening World Cup Qualifier for Serbia, and go level as their all time record scorer in the process.
Their meeting with the Republic of Ireland in Belgrade was poised at 1-1 when Mitrović was introduced just after the hour mark to try and make a difference, and he did exactly that with two goals in the space of eight minutes.
His first was nothing short of world class. Running wide onto a through ball, he spotted the Ireland goalkeeper off his line and executed a wonderful first time chip from a full 35 yards out.

Moments later he netted a more trademark Mitrović strike with a cracking header, bringing up 38 goals for Serbia in the process. That’s the same number that Stjepan Bobek scored for Yugoslavia, a record which has stood for the better part of 70 years.
Ireland got one back to make it 3-2 but were unable to find an equaliser, meaning Serbia went straight to the top of Group A in qualifying for next winter’s tournament in Qatar.

Elsewhere, there were some stunning goals in Turkey, but Kenny Tete’s Netherlands team were on the wrong side of a 4-2 defeat.
Tete played 69 minutes of the Group G encounter before being replaced at right-back by PSV Eindhoven’s Denzel Dumfries.
