Late Goal Halts Young Whites

Monday 15 April 2019 21:01

Fulham Under-23s were denied by a late goal in the North East after Magnus Norman was sent off on the stroke of half time.

Jerome Opoku’s header set the lads on the way to three points but Lee Connelly’s strike put a hold on celebrations.

What can only be described as a Sunday league pitch was causing issues in the rhythm of the game. Nicolas Santos-Clase fed Jayden Harris to skid a shot wide in the first opening.

What the pitch lacked, the hosts were making up for in spirit as Connelly latched onto a through pass and attempted an audacious chip on Magnus Norman which sailed over the bar.

Mattias Käit was acting as a number nine again and he rose highest to connect with Tayo Edun’s cross, but it skewed wide off his head.

Connelly was persisting with picking up pockets of space and he tested Norman from distance with a free kick then a 25-yard effort.

We did find the lead through the aerial route. Tyrese Francois's corner found Opoku who powered into the corner. The tide changed as Norman was penalised for handling outside of the area and was given his marching orders.

The Black Cats saw this as an opportunity to get back in as Ben Mbunga-Kimpioka poked an effort wide.

The lads regrouped at half time and with the familiar figure of George Wickens between the sticks looked solid. Harris sprung forward but could only fire a shot straight at Max Stryjek.

Santos-Clase forced the stopper into another low save at his far post as the Young Whites still looked the likelier.

Connor McAvoy looked comfortable in his first Under-23s start of the season as he marshalled the defence in Moritz Jenz’s absence admirably.

Although Fulham had the man disadvantage, they still pushed for a second. Harris rose from a cross but couldn’t connect and Marlon Fossey put the burners on to stand up a cross which evaded everyone.

Opoku was in the mood as a long, gangly leg reached out to perform an overhead kick which trickled wide. The screw was being turned by the lads as Francois embarked infield and unleashed a shot over the bar.

The hosts found a leveller in the final few minutes as Connelly, who was the bright spark, fired through the legs of Wickens to level the game.

The points were shared up North as Fulham prepare for the last game of the season against Norwich.
