Experienced Villa Edge PL2 Affair

Monday 21 October 2019 20:57

Main Action:

Aston Villa shaded a tight PL2 affair with little goalmouth action as the Under-23s slipped to a one goal defeat at Villa Park on Monday night.

With such an experienced Villa side, the boys knew they needed to be efficient with their chances. Martell Taylor-Crossdale seized on a loose pass to free Luca de la Torre who was incensed that a penalty wasn’t given following a clumsy challenge.

Much like the Everton game, the boys relished the up-hill challenge. Sonny Hilton turned on the ball and with little back lift arrowed one over the angle.

The mid-point in the first half came and went without Villa registering a shot on Taye Ashby-Hammond’s goal as the boys continued to dominate possession. Ben Davis was trampled down in a menacing area which presented Tyrese Francois with the dead ball opportunity which curled away from the post.

The hosts understandably came at the Young Whites in the second half. Ashby-Hammond was called into action to beat away some dangerous balls in and get down to Cameron Archer’s inviting pass destined for Jonathan Kodjia.

De la Torre’s balance and poise caused issues for the experienced centre half pairing of James Chester and Courtney Hause as he held off the former to poke into the gloves of Kalinic.

Taylor-Crossdale hung in the air to create his first opening from a corner after Zico Asare’s marauding run which dropped wide. The forward was in the mood in the latter stages as he turned on a move through the lines forcing the Villa stopper to help his strike over.

Lewis Brunt had the hosts' clearest sight on goal, and it came ten minutes from time. Nice work from Archer wasn’t rewarded by his team mate as he scuffed a first time shot over the top. The youth were needed to put Aston Villa in front late-on. Indiana Vassilev glanced a header into the corner following an inviting cross.

A slick one touch move almost had Fulham on terms as Jayden Harris’ acrobatic volley was pushed over by Kalinic in the final action.

What That Means:

Villa started the game a point ahead of the lads with a game fewer played, and they’d have been expecting a result. The defeat worsens the boys’ league position by one with Newcastle beating Sunderland.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Jayden Sweeney, who started on the bench this evening, is at the club on trialist basis.
  • Tayo Edun started his fifth consecutive domestic game in Premier League competitions which is his longest spell for over a year.
  • Villa fielded James Chester, Courtney Hause, Lovre Kalinic and Jonathan Kodjia on their comeback from injury.
