United Edge Frantic Second Half

Friday 13 September 2019 21:02

Main Action:

A game that shared two red cards, a missed penalty, and a host of chances saw Manchester United shade a narrow victory over our Under-23s on Friday night.

Fulham made a bright side against a formidable United side that were yet to taste defeat. Ryan De Havilland picked the ball up in a dangerous area to slip a ball into Martell Taylor-Crossdale who was eased off it by Teden Mengi.

Luca de la Torre grew closer to giving the visitors a lead as he glanced a deft flick towards the corner which deflected agonisingly wide. Anothony Elanga saw the closest his side came as he slalomed inside but was prevented by a combination of Moritz Jenz and Jaydn Mundle-Smith.

The best move of the game opened up the hosts. De Havilland’s combination play with Tayo Edun found Hilton one-on-one but his touch was heavy. At the other end, Edun sold Luca Ashby-Hammond short as Elanga took it wide around the stopper – on the turn, he scooped it over. Brandon Williams ghosted through as the defence opened up but the full back dragged his shot wide.

Edun found Hilton in acres of space through the middle but his poor control allowed the ball to bounce to safety. Ethan Galbraith thumped one at Ashby-Hammond who made his first excellent stop as we held our own at the interval.

The boys started as they finished the first as Harris’ bending first time shot slammed the outside of the post. The game momentum shifted as Mundle-Smith was dismissed for a late, high challenge.

The pressure started to become apparent as Dylan Levitt forced another stop from Ashby-Hammond fresh from England International duty. Largie Ramazani found a pull-back from Williams which ballooned over as United set up a base camp in Fulham’s half.

The creaking defence told with just five minutes to play. Ramazani jinked his way through a few challenges to give Levitt the chance to stroke home from the six-yard box. Williams gave his side a needless shaky few minutes as he was then dismissed for a second yellow with a reckless challenge on Jayden Harris.

The big chance to magic up a point came deep into stoppage time as substitute Timmy Abraham was brought down in the box. The striker stepped up himself but was blocked by a strong Matej Kovar save.

What That Means:

The lads stay in ninth after an encouraging performance against one of the most free-scoring sides in the league. Manchester United pull clear of West Ham in second temporarily with the win.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Damian Las started on the bench following his move from Chicago Fire.
  • Tayo Edun lined up at left back to mark his first PL2 appearance of the season.
  • The stellar performance given by the boys was the first time this season that United have scored less than twice.
