Middlesbrough hung onto a slender lead following a deluge of second half pressure from the Under-23s on Sunday afternoon at the Riverside Stadium.

Boro Protect Slender Lead

Sunday 2 February 2020 14:54

Main Action:

Middlesbrough hung onto a slender lead following a deluge of second half pressure from the Under-23s on Sunday afternoon at the Riverside Stadium.

Rumarn Burrell’s goal five minutes before the interval was enough to secure all three points for Boro who sat in for large parts of the second half.

Boro started brightly and pounced on a series of loose passes from the Young Whites. The most threatening coming from Dan Dodds’ driving run who forced a smart low save from Salva Ribera Palacios who switched in for Magnus Norman during the warm-up.

One simple pass allowed Martell Taylor-Crossdale to put the burners on, as he was hauled back by Nathan Wood. The defender lucky to escape with a yellow card as the forward stared down the goal.

Marlon Fossey looked sharp after nine-months out with injury. His clever pull back found Sylvester Jasper whose shot squirmed wide via deflection.

Another intricate move worked across the penalty area found Jasper. He attempted a curler that was too close to Sol Brynn. Moments later the winger was at it again as he burst down the left to force a reflex stop from Brynn with his feet.

Ribera Palacios was making his first start and was taking his chance. He clawed away a downward header destined to find the roof of the net. The ‘keeper was called into action again as Burrell broke through and fired hard at the near post with the number 12 standing tall.

After some intense pressure that required intense blocking to repel danger, Boro found the lead. Dodds ventured infield to slip in Burrell who found the corner.

The second half saw the change of Tyrese Francois being instilled at the base of midfield. This added control to the game as Boro struggled to string any sort of move together. Francois ventured forward and struck the base of the post with a venomous strike after some neat footwork form Jasper as the leveller drew nearer.

More intricacy around the box followed as Ben Davis flicked into the onrushing Fabio Carvalho. His attempt to come inside and finish was thwarted by Nathan Dale.

The Young Whites huffed and puffed without success as the hosts hung on.

What That Means:

The Under-23s stay 11th in the table and the win moves Boro into the final play-off spot despite those around them having a couple of games in-hand.

Notable Talking Points:

  • The starting XI consisted of five Under-18s players.
  • Moritz Jenz and Tyrese Francois returned to the bench after months out with injury. The former playing half an hour, the latter playing the second half.
  • Marlon Fossey played his first PL2 game of the season after another serious knee injury.
