Carvalho's Strike The Consolation

Monday 16 December 2019 21:10

Main Action:

The Under-23s found it tough-going in Kidderminster as West Brom ran out comfortable winners despite Fabio Carvalho’s consolation strike on Monday night.

West Brom flew out of the traps and had an early sight of goal. Taye Ashby-Hammond needed to be at his best to deny a point-blank snapshot after the ball bobbled around from a set-play.

The lads quickly settled from the lapse in concentration as Matt O’Riley delivered a delicious cross that Nicolas Santos-Clase could only head upwards. West Brom did take the lead shortly after. Stanley Asomugha rounded Ashby-Hammond to finish from a tight angle after beating the offside trap.

The lead was doubled mid-way through the half. A neat Asomugha back heel found Rayhaan Tulloch who fired in low off the post. There was an almost instant reply from the boys who needed to come at the hosts. Timmy Abraham laid-off to Ben Davis whose out-swinging effort bent wide.

Three minutes before the interval presented the perfect chance to go within half the distance at the break. O’Riley’s corner was met by the flying Abraham whose momentum took the ball over.

The start of the second half got the desired response as Santos-Clase drove at the heart of the defence and hit a cross that had its sting taken out of it by Josh Griffiths and dribbled along the goal line.

The Baggies had more space as the Young Whites chased the game and moments after coming on Nick Clayton-Phillips forced an excellent Ashby-Hammond save. The Fulham goal looked likelier by the minute as O’Riley broke and looked to curl one into the corner but for the finest of deflections.

West Brom attempted to kill the game but for an inspired Ashby-Hammond who somehow pushed wide Clayton-Phillips’ effort destined for the bottom corner. The game was put beyond the visitors as Steven Sessegnon went through the back of his man after getting the wrong side allowing Callum Morton to dispatch the spot kick.

The last kick of the game saw trademark Carvalho as he shifted the ball and curled one into the far corner.

What That Means:

With other results going against the lads, the Under-23s move down one place to ninth, and lie six points from the play-offs.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Matt O’Riley, Luca de la Torre and Steven Sessegnon all came in searching for regular game time after first team involvement.
  • Carvalho made it back-to-back PL2 goals with his strike this evening following his goal against West Ham.
