Stunners Seal First Win In Seven

Main Action:

Two stunning strikes from Luca de la Torre and Fabio Carvalho provided the Under-23s with a win over Aston Villa on Friday night.

The win gives the Young Whites their first win in seven games after a couple of moments of brilliance under the lights at Motspur Park.

The Fulham injury list was starting to shrink, which helped the dynamic of the side. The early chance fell to one of the returning contingent in Sonny Hilton who could only scoop over. The game lacked any meaningful chances which was epitomised by Jaden Philogene-Bidace lashing over from 25-yards.

Fabio Carvalho was entering some promising positions and it was him that fired a ball into the lurking Stansfield, but for the alert Mungo Bridge. A similar move, this time Ryan De Havilland the provider. His teasing cross missed the despairing Stansfield by millimetres.

The quality was missing from a drab affair, but de la Torre took it upon himself to change that. He drove at the Villa defence to ping an unstoppable drive into the top corner.

The lead could have been doubled as Cody Drameh’s low cross found the onrushing Hilton who was eased off it with a gentle nudge. Stansfield was tasting his first action in not only PL2 life, but as a lone striker. By his standards, he should have put his side out of sight. De la Torre’s recycled cross fell quickly to the number nine who toed his reaction shot wide.

Carvalho continued to find gaps in the Villa defence. He found a fortunate ricochet at his feet and unleashed a powerful drive into the midriff of Viljami Sinsalo. Stansfield then found the net in clinical fashion only for the flag to be raised against Carvalho earlier in the build-up.

Another moment of brilliance, this time from Carvalho. The winger picked the ball up in a similar area to the first goal and rattled one in off the underside of the crossbar. The second goal took the stuffing out of Aston Villa who conceded defeat and gave Colin Omogbehin and Mark Pembridge a much-needed win.

What That Means:

The win moves the Under-23s level on point with Norwich and Reading above them but remain 11th

Notable Talking Points:

  • Jay Stansfield started his first Under-23s game as a lone striker.
  • Cameron Thompson made his first appearance on the bench since a muscle injury suffered in August.
  • Luca de la Torre netted the first goal in 304 minutes of PL2 football.
