The Under-23s this time came out on the wrong end of another entertaining PL2 match against Middlesbrough at Motspur Park on Friday afternoon.

Santos-Clase's Brace Buried By Boro

Friday 27 September 2019 14:25

Main Action:

The Under-23s this time came out on the wrong end of another entertaining PL2 match against Middlesbrough at Motspur Park.

Three goals in 20 first half minutes gave the boys a battle to fight in the second half despite Nicolas Santos-Clase’s brace.

Middlesbrough came at Fulham with a purpose that reflected their league position. Dan Dodds scampered down the right and stood up a cross which was acrobatically met by Isiah Jones. Luca Ashby-Hammond got down smartly to push the ball out and Cody Drameh showed excellent strength to repel the follow-up.

Ashby-Hammond was again called into action as Jones was played through. The stopper showed excellent poise to deflect the ball behind for a corner.

Against the run of chances, Fulham took the lead with an inspired strike from Santos-Clase. The wide man cut in to fire into the top corner.

Boro immediately responded to dampen the spirits of the lads. Ben Liddle stepped up from the spot to level the game, then moments later sent a shot with the outside of his boot crashing into the top corner.

The openings were coming all too easily, Zico Asare needed to get a toe to a Dodds cross which almost diverted into his own net but for the reflexes of Ashby-Hammond. A misjudged back pass from Ben Tricker fell to Rumarn Burrell. His first shot was excellently saved but the follow up from Connor Malley found the net.

Fulham needed a goal after the break. They should have had one after Drameh’s dogged persistence found Martell Taylor-Crossdale who hit the post.

Again, dangerous balls into the box caused issues as Asare needed to be alert to stop Burrell gobbling up a tap-in. The resulting corner saw Nathan Dale hit the bar with a header.

Santos-Clase had another to his name to half the deficit after a nice one-two lead to him striking a half volley into the corner. Boro found their two-goal advantage again after Burrell instinctively slammed home a knock down from a corner.

What That Means:

Boro further consolidate their play-off place with a four-point cushion back to West Brom. Fulham remain ninth but wins for Newcastle and Norwich could put us into eleventh.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Luca Murphy came off the bench to make his first Under-23s appearance following his excellent form in the Under-18s.
  • Santos-Clase netted his first brace since the PL Cup game at Colchester in February.
