Toon Make Man Advantage Count

Friday 30 August 2019 16:13

Main Action:

There was a tale of the spot kicks at Motspur Park as ten-man Fulham Under-23s surrendered a lead against Newcastle on Friday afternoon.

Sonny Hilton gave us a lead mid-way through the first half before Jerome Opoku was dismissed. Thomas Allan scored twice from the bench, once from the spot, to secure the win as Ryan De Havilland missed a penalty at the other end.

The game started in an open manner as both sides looked positive from the outset. Timmy Abraham took a tumble in the box which was waved away. Martell Taylor-Crossdale then took aim and rippled the protective netting behind the goal.

Newcastle came closest after a quarter of an hour. Jamie Sterry looked to deceive Luca Ashby-Hammond at his near post with a powerful low drive from 25-yards which the stopper was equal to.

Opoku was then booked for a rash tackle on the corner of the box. The resulting free kick came to nothing.

De Havilland tried a similar approach as he forced Jake Turner into a save which he couldn’t claim cleanly. Taylor-Crossdale’s willing running was rewarded as he shrugged off his man and squared a pass for Sonny Hilton to tap home.

Opoku was then dismissed for a second yellow card on the stroke of half time. The centre half shown his marching orders for leaving an outstretched arm from a quick Newcastle break.

Seconds after the interval, Cody Drameh sold Ashby-Hammond short but the ‘keeper stood tall to pull off an excellent save. The stopper was then beaten via the penalty spot. Abraham made a hasty tackle in the box to allow sub Allan to score.

At the other end, Jayden Harris was brought down by the visitors’ stopper Turner to give us a penalty of our own. De Havilland cleanly struck the crossbar as a big opportunity went begging.

Sterry burst forward from full back again and played a one two with Allan. The defender poked the ball onto the base of the post. The man advantage reared its head as Allan broke through to find the corner.

The Toon saw out their lead and took home three points back to the North East.

What That Means:

Newcastle move level on points with the lads as we stay ninth temporarily. The rest of the week’s fixtures conclude tonight and into Monday.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Moritz Jenz returned to the bench for the first time this season following a lengthy muscular problem.
  • Mark Pembridge and Colin Omogbehin named the same team that finished the win at Stoke.
  • Sonny Hilton netted his first goal at Under-23 level.
