The Under-23s opened their PL Cup account in style by defeating the holders Everton at Motspur Park on Sunday afternoon.

Fulham Inflict First Everton Defeat

Sunday 6 October 2019 13:00

Main Action:

The Under-23s opened their PL Cup account in style by defeating the holders Everton at Motspur Park on Sunday afternoon.

Tyrese Francois dwelled on the ball in an out of character fashion which presented Ellis Simms with his first sight of goal. Magnus Norman got down well to keep the scores level.

A slick Fulham move forced Nico Hansen into a smart save at a good height as Ben Davis let off a powerful effort.

Davis tried his luck again with a snapshot from Martell Taylor-Crossdale’s deflected free kick which Hansen watched over the top.

Norman was meaningfully called into action for the first time as Anthony Gordon cut inside to send a dipping shot his way that was palmed to safety. The deserved opening came ten minutes from the interval. Davis got to the by-line and cut one back for Luca de la Torre who found the corner.

Everton almost responded immediately with Harry Charsley testing Norman to his limits. Understandably, Everton boss David Unsworth wasn’t happy with his side’s performance so made a double change at the break. One of his fresh faces, Manasse Mampala, sent a surging cross towards Gordon who fired over.

The tricky winger Gordon was causing issues as his curling free kick rattled the crossbar on the hour. The two substitutes combined to find the leveller. Mampala’s cross found Kyle John who creeped behind Tayo Edun to tap home.

Credit to the lads, who weathered the impending Everton storm to retake the lead. Davis again got in behind in similar fashion to the opener and squared for Sonny Hilton to blast home.

What That Means:

With Watford and Plymouth playing out a score draw, the boys move top of the group with an excellent win over the Cup holders.

Notable talking Points:

  • Maxime Le Marchand made an appearance for the Under-23s in his search for match fitness.
  • Dennis Adeniran faced his former club as he lined up for The Toffees.
  • Today was the first time this season that Everton have tasted defeat. They have four draws and three wins in PL2 division One this season.
