Fulham fell to a defeat in a close match to league leaders Chelsea at Motspur Park on Friday evening.

Fulham’s Under-18s lost 1-0 to Chelsea in the Premier League South at Motspur Park on Friday evening, and a goal from Charlie Brown in the second half settled the tie. These teams face each other again on Tuesday in the quarter-final of the FA Youth Cup.

Fulham attacked early on in the match, Reece York did well to steal the ball down the right of the pitch. He darted towards goal and was pulled down just outside the box.

Ryan De Havilland took the free-kick, firing through a crowded area but not finding anyone.

Fulham went close again in the 11th minute. Showkat Tahir drove through midfield, he was dispossessed outside the area but Ben Davis picked up the ball and was fouled in the D to set up another good attacking position. De Havilland took the set piece, shooting inches past the bottom right post.

Chelsea had their first real opportunity a quarter of an hour into the tie, also from a set piece. Marcel Lewis took a free-kick 35-yards out, but instead of putting it in the box he elected to cleverly pull the ball to the left wing for Brown.

The striker curled a low ball across the box for Clinton Mola, but good defending from Scott Armsworth denied him.

Fulham had another chance from a set piece, De Havilland curled a ball to Abraham, who poked a shot at an awkward height on target but a good save by Jamie Cumming prevented him. Chelsea countered quickly, but Brown headed over George Wickens' bar.

Five minutes later, Marcel Lewis running down the left shot hard for the near post, Wickens was there again to make the save. The ball rebounded into the path of Brown, he skewed his shot wide.

32 minutes into the match York with a burst of pace broke through midfield. He slotted a ball to Abraham, who shot with his left but couldn’t find the connection needed and his effort drifted wide.

In the second half, Chelsea started to press more and were spending an increasing amount of time in Fulham’s final third.

Ten minutes in and Chelsea thought they had scored. A one touch pass by Jon Russell found Tino Anjorin, he fired for the near post and found the back of the net, but he was denied by the raising of the offside flag.

Chelsea broke the deadlock in the 68th minute after a period of pressure. Marcel Laviner curled a ball in from the left touchline and found Brown, he bulleted a header past Wickens and into the back of the net to score the winning goal.

Fulham almost hit straight back, substitute Harvey Elliott was slipped through on goal down the left thanks to his blistering acceleration. Cumming rushed out and smothered his low drive at goal.

From that point Chelsea were able to deal with the Fulham pressure and see out the remainder of the match, content to take a 1-0 win at Motspur Park.
