Royals Snap Unbeaten Run

Saturday 16 March 2019 12:58

Fulham Under-18s' late comeback proved in-vain as Reading Under-18s put an end to their unbeaten run on Saturday morning.

Sonny Hilton and Zico Asare buoyed life into the visitors after The Royals found themselves 3-0 up after an hour.

Fulham implemented a system which was of a clear counter attacking mind-set from the get-go. Asare and Jean-Pierre Tiehi were having joy in the right channel.

The Royals found the lead early on. Ethan Bristow’s cross was met by a clever header by Claudio Osario. A lovely move was the response of the Young Whites. Harvey Elliott, Tiehi and Ryan De Havilland combined for the latter to graze the bar with his end product.

Another intricate move followed. This time Hilton curled one narrowly over the top. Fulham could have been accused of overplaying at times. Tight passing in the box breaking down before the trigger could be pulled.

Connor McAvoy snuck around the back from a set-play to provide a cut-back that couldn’t be firmly met by Tiehi from point blank range.

Still Reading frustrated the Young Whites heading into the break as a few fouls crept into the game from both sides.

A mix up at the back led to Dejan Tetek getting to the ball ahead of Toni Stahl to prod home from close range. The Royals were thriving off the openness of Fulham and Shamar Moore slammed another one in from close range after pinball in the box.

Fulham weren’t finished yet. Jonathon Page surged forward to find Hilton in a good position. The midfielder cut back inside and squeezed one into the corner. The hosts were exploiting gaps as we moved men forward. Osario sprung the offside trap to force a good save from Stahl.

Hilton’s goal came at the expense of the stopper for the hosts. Substitute goalkeeper Harvey Roberts entering the action. The ‘keeper made two good stops to keep his side up. Firstly, from Elliott, then from Page.

A fortunate goal led to a route back into the game. Asare got too much on his cross but the wind looped it into the top corner.

Half of the Fulham bench were celebrating in the dying seconds as Scott Armsworth glanced a header inches wide of the far post with Roberts rooted to the spot.

Reading held on by the skin of their teeth to scrape home all three points.
