Saints Secure Win

Saturday 26 January 2019 13:15

Fulham Under-18s were comprehensively beaten by three rapid paced Southampton goals on Saturday morning.

Harvey Elliott’s free kick acted merely as a consolation as two Christian Norton headers, and his replacement, Dan Bartlett, secured a victory for the hosts.

The Saints started the game in clinical fashion, after Fulham had dominated the ball. Will Ferry’s powerful run and cross was met by a glancing header from Norton to give the hosts a quick-fire lead.

Fulham clicked quickly into gear and Showkat Tahir was presented with a golden chance to level the game. The winger started the move, and a mazy run from Harvey Elliott returned the favour, only for Alex Cull to make an outstanding save.

Ryan De Havilland attempted to dictate play from the Southampton half as he lifted a precise pass into Terry Ablade, but the forward couldn’t connect cleanly.

Confusion in the penalty area almost lead to the Saints doubling their lead. Enzo Robise’s corner deceived everyone and it needed the alert Tristan Cover to clear off the line.

Fulham found themselves two goals down and needing to hit back fast through an almost identical goal. Norton’s fine header flighted into the corner after fine work from the other wing, this time from Robise.

Tahir was at it again, and looked sharp as he floated across the midfield. He forced Cull into a slightly easier stop than the first.

The third goal came moments after the restart. Substitute Dan Bartlett followed up a Robise strike which was saved well by Luca Ashby-Hammond, only for the forward to secure a simple tap-in.

The Young Whites weren’t deterred from trying to narrow the score. Cover’s strong run allowed Harvey Elliott to deliver a pull back to Fabio Carvalho but captain Kameron Ledwidge made a fine block.

De Havilland’s dipping and swerving free kick evaded the far post by inches as Cull was rooted to the spot. The midfielder was at it again to fire a shot narrowly wide of the other post. The game looked increasingly likely not to be the Young Whites’ day.

Elliott showed a glimmer of the magic we have been accustomed to seeing this season. The winger gave us a lifeline with a nicely placed free kick into the far corner.

Having been out for a lengthy period through injury, Jean-Pierre Tiehi’s powerful presence was making a difference. The striker was played in by De Havilland but could only poke a shot at Cull.

The score line was set for the day as Southampton walked away with three points.
