Swansea Hold on To Draw

Wednesday 19 December 2018 15:23

Fulham Under-18s went into the Christmas break securing a point after drawing 1-1 with Swansea on Wednesday morning.

Tivonge Rushesha's penalty came against the run of play, but Fabio Carvalho’s strike ensured we go back to London with something to show for our efforts.

Fulham set the tempo early on as a slick, yet simplistic moved ended in Terry Ablade being flagged offside from a Fabio Carvalho reverse pass.

The forward’s physicality was proving a problem as he released Harvey Elliott down the right. The resulting shot from Ryan De Havilland was blocked behind. Elliott persisted in finding gaps and was picked out again by Scott Armsworth’s raking cross field pass – strong appeals for handball were turned down.

There was only one team controlling the game in the first 20 minutes. Sonny Hilton tried his luck from distance and Scott Reed watched it sail over his crossbar.

Massively against the run of play, The Swans took the lead mid-way through the half from the spot. Rushesha converted his penalty precisely after Hilton brought down his man.

The goal didn’t deter the playing style in which the Young Whites wanted to play as more intricate build-up led to more chances. Carvalho saw his shot blocked at the last after clever build-up.

A similar move, but this time the end product. Sylvester Jasper’s pull-back found Carvalho and his first touch set him up for a clinical finish from ten-yards.

Swansea made a positive sub at the break as they looked to bring the game to Fulham, they started the second half brightly, but with little by the way of chances. Arnor Gudjohnson slalomed his way through and his snapshot volley had Stahl worried as it rose over the bar.

A more direct route from Fulham took the hosts by surprise. Armsworth’s cross field pass allowed Elliott to flick on to Ablade – he returned the favour to create another shooting opportunity which was blocked.

Elliott was heavily involved again and was presented with his best chance of the game. A ball to the back-post was sliced over when he had a yard of space.

Mason Jones-Thomas made his way inside and rattled Stahl’s post from 25-yards – the closest the Swans had come after an hour. Ablade’s opening came at a key time. His toe-poke finish trickled the wrong side of the post under pressure.

The game fragmented in the closing stages as both teams searched for the elusive winner. Jasper was played inside by Carvalho as the duo tried to force the issue. Reed was out smartly to smother with his feet. That proved to be the last action as we end 2018 with a draw.
