U18s Give Hearty Cup Display

Main Action:

The Under-18s bowed out of the FA Youth Cup with a brave and gutsy performance at the hands of Manchester City on Thursday night.

Lewis Fiorini’s goal 12 minutes into the affair was enough to see the blue side of Manchester over the line.

City played a style that reflected their first team. They dominated possession early on without threatening the Fulham back-line. Following a better spell from the Young Whites, City hit on the break. Fiorini picked the ball up between the lines and curled into the corner.

The goal didn’t deter Steve Wigley’s side as a set play was floated into Luca Murphy. The centre half nodded a header menacingly across the box which dropped wide. City were happy to dominate the ball with the lead and strangled Fulham.

Opportunities still presented themselves as Jay Stansfield had his first sniff at goal following a loose ball. Luke Mbete-Tabu flung himself in the path of the shot to prevent an equaliser. Another smart move, aided by the strength of Jean-Pierre Tiehi, resulted in Fabio Carvalho looking to pass one into the corner – comfortably held by Cieran Slicker.

The second half saw a purpose by the lads. City sat in as Ollie O’Neill attacked the by-line and pulled a ball just out of reach of the lurking Terry Ablade who was fresh off the bench.

City had sparingly troubled Damian Las on the chance count but should’ve killed the game ten minutes from time. Morgan Rogers had peeled wide and found a cross-cum-shot from Jayden Braaf at his feet which somehow went wide.

The golden chance for Fulham came on 85 minutes. A deflected free kick found its way through a sea of bodies to Jonathon Page who was smothered excellently by Slicker. Stansfield then had the ball in the net deep into stoppage time, but the linesman’s flag denied the celebrations.

What That Means:

The Under-18s exit the FA Youth Cup at the fifth round. Manchester City will host Burnley.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Jay Stansfield started his first U18 game since December after signing his pro contract.
  • Five players dropped into the XI from the U23 set-up.
