Stansfield Brace Completes Turnaround

Wednesday 28 August 2019 19:18

Main Action:

Jay Stansfield’s brace turned the game on its head meaning that Fulham Under-18s ran out marginal winners against Leicester City at St. George’s Park on Wednesday evening.

Stansfield was the first to break the Leicester line and hold off a challenge to test Chiturtu Odenze between the sticks.

The Foxes adopted an aggressive press which worked for parts. Dempsey Arlott-John found a yard outside the box and fired over George Wickens’ bar. The frontman looked bright for Leicester running into channels, and if it weren’t for a nick off a defender, would have given his side the lead. He was at it again, forcing Wickens into a strong low save on half an hour.

The pressure being applied eventually buckled the Fulham defence. Ethan Fitzhugh was played in from in-to-out and finished past Wickens. Goals were not an issue this season for the boys and they needed a couple at the interval to maintain their unbeaten season.

Arlott-John again caused issues as he darted inside to clatter the post on the penalty spot. Sylvester Jasper had his first chance to try his trickery after a clever reverse Stansfield pass but dragged his shot wide.

The ‘Fulham of the season so far’ begun to show as Stansfield seized on a loose pass to fire a first time shot at the feet of Odenze. Fabio Carvalho then fired over after a mazy run.

Terry Ablade’s speed was causing problems from the bench and he won a spot kick mid-way through the second half. Jasper was blocked by a strong stop from 12-yards.

The deserved leveller came 13 minutes from time. Jasper found a precise pass for Stansfield to bury first time. It was déjà vu three minutes later. Ablade dug out a cross for Stansfield to double his tally with a powerful header.

Wickens was in inspired form to keep out Arlott-John at full tilt, sprawling his full frame to deny the rapid striker. Carvalho could have killed the game at the other end if it weren’t for another strong stop.

The boys saw out their first away win of the season with a spirited performance.

What That Means:

Fulham played an early game ahead of the other teams in the league who play Saturday. The win puts them temporarily top of the league before Brighton and Chelsea play.

Notable Talking Points:

  • The Under-18s named the same team that comfortably saw of Reading the previous week.
  • Stansfield becomes the Premier League Under-18s’ top scorer with his brace this evening.
  • Jasper’s penalty was his first miss from the spot this season following successful attempts against Spurs and Norwich.
