U18s Stroll To Victory

Saturday 22 February 2020 12:56

Main Action:

The Under-18s comprehensively claimed three points at Staplewood with an accomplished performance against a lacklustre Southampton side on Saturday morning.

A Jay Stansfield brace and an Ollie O’Neill strike had Fulham in cruise control before a late Jack Turner header blotted the copy book.

The Young Whites started with an accomplished look about them. Sylvester Jasper and Fabio Carvalho sending in dangerous crosses which needed last-resort action.

The patient play started to reap rewards as Jean-Pierre Tiehi’s honesty played against him. He tried to stay on his feet in the area, and as the striker regained his footing squared out of reach of the flying Jasper.

The lead was then gained through a vast amount of confusion. Stansfield poked home Idris Odutayo’s cross but the flag was raised. After conferring with his assistant, the goal was given as the cross was flicked on by a Southampton head. The press was well and truly on as Carvalho was felled in the area. Stansfield stepped up but was denied by a strong save by Oliver Wright.

Jasper’s quick breaks were causing havoc in the Saints defence. He drove from inside his own half and sent a shot spinning wide via a deflection with Wright beaten.

Carvalho stood over a wide free kick and aimed to deceive Wright by going for the top corner. The arcing strike dipped wide. Jasper continued to menace the full backs as he forced another low save from Wright. Steve Wigley’s side could have been out of sight at the interval.

The chancing were flooding in, with sub Terry Ablade the latest to miss. The forward sliced over from ten-yards. The best move of the game doubled the lead. Some slick one-touch movement in the box found Stansfield unmarked with a tap-in. Jasper was on a quest to get on the scoresheet as Wright sprawled low to beat his shot away.

Jasper then turned provider as his perfect pass found Ollie O’Neill who put the game beyond any doubt. Stansfield was chasing another treble as Cody Drameh’s deep cross found his head with little purchase.

Southampton did find a late goal as Turner glanced home Morris’ cross. Jonathon Page’s clever lofted pass presented Stansfield with his moment. Going with the wrong foot, Wright read the strike and saved.

What That Means:

With Chelsea winning last night, the pressure was on to move back to the top. The Young Whites retake the summit on goal difference and a game in hand.

Notable Talking Points:

  • The team was unchanged from the FA Youth Cup defeat at Manchester City.
  • Ollie O’Neill scored after officially turning pro yesterday.
