The Under-18s played out their second league draw of the season in an open-ended game against Arsenal on Saturday morning.

Enthralling Match-Up Ends Honours Even

Main Action:

The Under-18s played out their second league draw of the season in an open-ended game against Arsenal on Saturday morning.

Arsenal came with a pedigree that didn’t reflect their league position and started the brighter. Sam Greenwood ended a slick move by hitting the underside of the crossbar early on.

Teams are struggling to keep Jay Stansfield out of the game as he took aim for the first time following a lax pass. His shot dribbled wide with Hubert Graczyk scrambling. Against the run of play, the boys took a lead following another defensive error. Terry Ablade pounced on the loose pass to fire through the legs of the ‘keeper.

The quick turnovers were The Gunners’ downfall as the front three countered at blistering pace. Stansfield could have had his goal for his tireless effort but for too much outward curl.

When the visitors did get into purposeful areas, they looked dangerous. Nathan Butler-Oyedeji couldn’t connect properly with Ryan Alebiosu’s cross and sent it back to where it came harmlessly wide. A loose ball from a set-play then forced Luca Ashby-Hammond into a reaction stop as Arsenal searched for the leveller.

The boys were caught in their own tactic shortly before the interval. A quick turnover allowed Alebiosu to fire a low cross which looped in off the unfortunate Ibane Bowat.

A more accomplished Fulham side came out in the second half as the tricky Sylvester Jasper fired straight into the arms of Graczyk. The same battle raged on, but this time Jasper turned his man inside out and forced a top-class claw from the stopper.

Shrouded appeals for handball caused confusion but the ball found its way to Stansfield who found the inspired Graczyk. The goal that had been on the cards arrived as a clever Jasper flick freed Stansfield who hammered home.

Arsenal inevitably hit back as Miguel Azeez seized up a long-range drive that had Ashby-Hammond at full extent. From the resulting set play a punch from Ashby-Hammond was returned to Dan Oyegoke who nodded home.

The frantic final 15 minutes saw a flurry of opening for both sides, the best going to Jean-Pierre Tiehi whose flying header flashed wide from an enticing Adrion Pajaziti cross.

What That Means:

The Under-18s stay top, but with Chelsea beating Spurs, The Blues winning their game in hand would move them to the top.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Jay Stansfield netted his 18th of the season.
  • Terry Ablade scored his second in three games.
