Stansfield Rescues Valuable Point

 Main Action:

Fulham Under-18s secured what could prove to be a valuable point against Aston Villa at Motspur Park, despite going behind twice.

Goals from Jean-Pierre Tiehi and Jay Stansfield helped the side finish with a point and increase their advantage at the top of the table.

The Young Whites started the game brightly and created the first chance of the game.  Six minutes in, Stansfield delivered a cross from the right-hand side which fell perfectly for Mika Biereth but his attempt slid just wide of the right post.

The Villans grew into the game and came close to opening the scoring on 12 minutes when forward DJ Campton-Sturridge was played through on goal. George Wickens, on his return, came rushing off his line to deny him and block the effort.

Villa opened the scoring 20 minutes in from the penalty spot after Wickens was judged to bring down Campton-Sturridge. Hayden Lindley’s effort bounced off the post, but Charlie Farr was left free to tap in the rebound.

Connor McAvoy nearly levelled the score a few minutes later with what would have been a wonderful goal. Ollie O’Neill’s free-kick made its way to the back post, but McAvoy’s side footed effort went just wide at the far post.

Fulham enjoyed positive spells of possession but struggled to break Villa down. O’Neill had a powerful effort denied by the goalkeeper straight after Campton-Sturridge failed to double the visitors’ lead from a cross.

Steve Wigley’s side finally found the breakthrough on 39 minutes. Biereth slid Tiehi through on goal and the striker calmly passed the ball to the goalkeeper's right and into the back of the net.

Tiehi nearly scored his second just before half-time when his header cannoned off the crossbar and was quickly cleared.

Villa regained their one goal advantage 56 minutes in through Campton-Sturridge. The ball was drilled into the box from the left-hand side by Cameron Archer and he was in place to fire past Wickens.

Creativity in the final third was lacking for much of the second half but with 87 minutes on the clock, Stansfield stepped up. His free-kick took a large deflection and the goalkeeper was left flat footed as he watched the ball sail past him.

The hosts continued to push for a winner but couldn’t find the third and the game finished 2-2.

What This Means:

The result means Fulham remain top of the table by one point with a superior goal difference. Meanwhile Aston Villa stay in seventh.

Key Talking Points:

  • Goalkeeper George Wickens made his return after five months out of the team with an injury.
  • Jean- Pierre Tiehi struggled as he left the pitch with an injury in the second half.
