When former player Bobby Robson was called back from Vancouver Royals in Canada to manage the Club he had left as a player some six months earlier, he must have suspected he was being handed a poisoned chalice and the job came too early in his managerial career.

He was sacked 10 months after taking charge at Fulham with the Club stranded at the foot of Division Two.

He moved on to Ipswich Town in 1969 and it was there that he established his reputation as a successful manager.

Robson went on to manage England, PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Clube de Portugal, FC Porto, Barcelona and Newcastle United with distinction.

He died at the age of 76 in July 2009 after a long battle with cancer.
