Fulham went into their centenary season as a professional club amongst the favourites for promotion, led by a man noted for his inspirational qualities as a manager. Kevin Keegan was now in full-time charge of First Team affairs.
The 1998/99 season brought the supporters the success they had yearned for. It had been a long time coming - 50 years in fact - as Fulham romped to the Second Division title.
As the season wore on, Club records (defensive as well as attacking) tumbled and the Al Fayed revolution was officially launched.
The likes of Steve Finnan, Barry Hayles and Geoff Horsfield all joined the ranks, while cameos from former Newcastle United stars Philippe Albert and Peter Beardsley added to the glamour.
However, having succeeded Glenn Hoddle as England manager in February 1999, Keegan decided he could no longer juggle the two jobs and he departed Craven Cottage at the end of the season.
