Fulham's Greatest Ever Player, The Maestro Johnny Haynes, Makes His Last Appearance For The Whites
January 1970
Johnny Haynes played his final game for Fulham in a 1-1 draw with Stockport County at Craven Cottage. Known as 'The Maestro', Haynes was and is idolised by the Fulham faithful, as he spent the vast majority of his career on the banks of the Thames despite offers from bigger clubs. He easily holds the club aggregate appearance record with 657 games in a white shirt, and also held the club top scorer spot with 157 goals until Gordon Davies surpassed him in 1989. Haynes also enjoyed a glittering England career - earning 56 caps, captaining the side on 22 of those occasions. His finest moment playing for his country is widely considered to be the 9-3 thrashing of Scotland at Wembley in 1961, where he scored twice and orchestrated a devastating display of slick, precise passing that created multiple scoring opportunities for his teammates. When Pele describes someone as "the best passer of the ball I've ever seen", you know that player is special - and Haynes was that player..
