Fulham fell to a 1-2 defeat against a ruthless Crystal Palace outfit on Saturday afternoon at Craven Cottage.

An early Jaïro Riedewald strike gave the hosts a lead heading into the break before Wilfried Zaha put the match beyond reach with twenty minutes to go. Deep in to six minutes of added time Tom Cairney thundered one in to the top corner to pull one back. A glimmer of an opening, proved nothing more than a consolation.

Scott Parker made one change from the side that was denied all three points at Bramall Lane last weekend. Mario Lemina, returning from injury, replaced Ivan Cavaleiro.

The light drizzle that been passing across Craven Cottage in the build-up to the match had subsided by the time the referee got the match under way, a gentle breeze whipping up from the river.

After a confident opening from Fulham, Crystal Palace took the lead on their first attack forward. A lofted ball over the back line found Wilfried Zaha. The Ivorian fired a strong effort on target which Alphonse Areola did well to parry clear. Regaining possession and spotting a smart run from Riedewald, Zaha slipped a picture perfect ball into his path and the Dutchman smashed home at the near post. A gut punch after some nice stuff early on.

Ademola Lookman came close to pulling the score-line level in the 14th minute when his shot from a tight angle was parried on to the post by Vicente Guaita after some quick build-up.

The light drizzle evolved into a persistent lashing rain and Fulham kept probing for an equaliser and in the 24th minute the post denied Lookman once more. Antonee Robinson, a constant outlet down the left wing fizzed a first time pass into the feet of Lookman who lashed a vicious left-footed effort off the base of the post. An excellent shot across the face of the goal. With the ball sitting invitingly in the box Mitro prodded a shot over the bar.

It was a composed and fluid Fulham outfit pressing as the half progressed but the ever-present danger of Zaha and dynamic Eagles front three looked ominous on the counter .

As the referee brought the first half to a close  Fulham would have felt somewhat hard done by given the flow of the match and the post denying our advances twice.

The second half started in a similar fashion to how the first ended, with Crystal Palace contented to sit back and let us attack & look to catch us on the counter-attack.

It was a quiet opening ten minutes of the second half and aside from a header from Aleksandar Mitrović that went over the bar from a Tom Cairney freekick, it was an uneventful affair. A tireless and a ruthlessly structured Palace outfit closing down all pockets of space as soon as they appeared to open up. The screams of Ray Lewington encouraging Crystal Palace players to “get around the ball” every time a Fulham player had the ball in a position to potentially inflict damage.

In the 64th minute another lethal counter attack saw the lead doubled for the visitors. A quick ball down the right wing was picked up by Michy Batshuayi. The Belgian had time to pick his mark at the back post and without hesitation he drilled a low cross to the feet of Zaha who simply had to task of tapping home. Clinical and ruthless on the counter from Crystal Palace.

The visitors closed up shop and cemented their shape even more heading into the final 15 minutes but still looked menacing when given the chance to push forward.

In the 86th minute, after consulting VAR, substitute Aboubakar Kamara was shown a straight red card for a poor tackle on Eberechi Eze to compound what was a frustrating day at the office for Fulham.

Deep into stoppage time Tom Cairney unleashed a tasty left-footed thunderbolt into the top corner to grab a consolation but it proved too little too late.

We will look to get back on track next week at Craven Cottage as we host West Bromwich Albion on Monday night.
