Marco Silva wants Tom Cairney back in contention as soon as possible, but will not rush the midfielder.

Fulham’s Captain felt his knee in his first session under the new boss, and it’s now about managing that before reintegrating him into the side.

“It’s a situation where we have to see day by day,” Silva explained in his pre-Huddersfield Town press conference. “He started the pre-season, not with me.

“With me he’s had just one training session and he got worse, so we decided to stop because what I want from Tom is what I want from all the others; I want them 100 per cent ready to train hard and play at their best level.

“This is what I want from Tom as well. Unfortunately for me he felt the pain in the knee that day.

“As you know, he’s an important player for the football club, and an important player for me as well.

“Let’s hope we can have him as soon as possible, but I want him 100 per cent ready to play his best level.”
