Stefan Johansen has made the decision to call time on his international career.

The 30-year-old, who was the current captain of the Norway national team, announced the news on his Instagram page.

Writing in his native tongue, Johansen said: “An era in my career is over. I have played my last match with the flag on my chest. I feel it is natural, with a new generation on the way and the recent change of coach.

“It has been an honour to play for Norway for the last eight years, and I would especially like to thank Lars Lagerbäck who gave me the opportunity to be captain. It has been one of the biggest highlights of my career for me and the rest of the family.

“I also want to thank the fans for everything we have been through since 2013, although unfortunately we have not managed to make it to the championship. At the same time, I would like to thank all teammates and the support staff around for good years on the national team.

“The last year has been particular for many, also for us football players, but I hope that Ståle Solbakken and the rest of the team can take Norway to new heights. I have informed Ståle about the decision, and he understands my choice.”

Johansen made his debut for Norway in 2013 and went on to win 55 caps and score six goals. He was given the captaincy four years ago this month, in the same week that the Norway squad trained at Motspur Park ahead of a World Cup Qualifier against Northern Ireland.
