Fulham FC Foundation’s Football & Education programme, in partnership with Raynes Park High School, have been busy preparing for a huge season in 2021/22.

We caught up with Head Coach Ash Nevins to learn more about his squad, the programme and the work that has gone in after a tumultuous last season.

“Last year was difficult because of the circumstance of what was happening at the time. We definitely had some obstacles and hurdles, but it allowed us to explore different avenues of the programme, stuff that more developed the person which was interesting to do.”

Season 2021/22 begins on a positive note, with the Football & Education programme returning at Fulham FC’s training ground in Motspur Park, a truly state-of-the-art facility that offers these student athletes a taste of the professional environment. Ash notes that this move has really brought a buzz to the group.

“We’ve been in pre-season for about five weeks now, they’ve been training 2 or 3 times a week with a view to starting school life in a couple of weeks’ time and fixtures shortly after,” said Nevins.

It will be a busy season ahead for the programme, with two squads comprising of approximately 40 players managed by Head Coach Nevins and two assistants, Richard Austria and Edward Turnbull.

A Year 13 group

“Our programme will play in two of the EFL community leagues this season, South East One and South East Two. The boys will play in their league fixtures, against other colleges linked with football clubs, as well as the cup competitions the league has to offer. We are also exploring other potential fixtures that will give opportunities to our players outside of those league fixtures as well, that will be ongoing throughout the year.”

Nevins has learnt so much from the difficult circumstances over the past 18 months, and while there’s anticipation around every new season, this year especially will allow the staff to bring new learnings into the environment and enrich each student athlete’s experience.

“I’m most looking forward to working with our new bunch of players, as well as the new team that I have around me in Rich and Ed. We’re looking forward to really kicking on the overall programme. Yes we’re here to develop a football player, and assist them become the best they can, but also, because of the avenues we’ve explored with the person focus last year that’s something we’re trying to build on and get a well-rounded view going into this year.”
