Last week, Jay Stansfield’s loan move to Exeter City pulled at the heartstrings of the football world, and he capped his debut with a win on Saturday.

The first person to wear the number nine shirt for the Grecians since his father Adam, Stansfield came off the bench – to a fabulous reception – in the 79th minute of their 1-0 home win over MK Dons.

Manager Matt Taylor said at full-time: “Jay coming on means more to certain people than it does to our supporters. It's a moment for him and his family.

“He coped with it well and he impacted the game. To bring an asset on like Jay just helped with the legs at the top end of the pitch.”

Elsewhere in League One, Sylvester Jasper came off the bench for Bristol Rovers to help salvage a home draw with Morecambe.

The winger was introduced for his debut on 71 minutes, shortly before the Gas hit an equaliser to make it 2-2.

In League Two, Taye Ashby-Hammond saved a penalty in Stevenage’s 2-1 victory at Crewe Alexandra, a result which moved them up to second in the standings, while Kieron Bowie was on target in Northampton Town’s 3-1 victory at home to Barrow.

There was a dramatic late win for Luca Ashby-Hammond’s Aldershot Town in the National League, and in the division below Jonathon Page helped Farnborough to three points at Cheshunt.

Jean-Pierre Tiehi bagged his first Hamilton goal in their 2-2 draw at Cove Rangers in the Scottish Championship, while overseas there were debuts for Joe Bryan and Tyrese Francois.

Coming off the bench in the 76th minute, Bryan was unable to help OGC Nice come back from Monaco’s solitary goal scored seven minutes earlier.

Francois was in a similar situation. HNK Gorica got a goal back three minutes after his introduction, but they couldn’t find an equaliser in their 2-1 defeat by NK Varazdin.
