Jamaica’s 2023 Gold Cup campaign almost got off to the perfect start in Chicago, but a late United States equaliser meant they had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid played the full 90 for the Reggae Boyz, who got off to a fast start when Damion Onandi Lowe headed in a free-kick from Demarai Gray, who was making his debut following his allegiance switch from England.

Things could have got better for Jamaica when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Michail Antonio just before the half hour mark, but Leon Bailey saw his spot-kick saved by Matt Turner.

Jamaica defended resolutely throughout, but an unfortunate touch in their own box saw a loose ball drop to United States substitute Brandon Vazquez in the 88th minute, who emphatically planted in the equaliser.

Bobby's next Group A game sees Jamaica face Trinidad & Tobago in St Louis on Wednesday.

The United States squad is far changed from the one which recently won the Nations League, with Antonee Robinson one of 19 players given a rest for the Gold Cup.

Last week, Saša Lukić played the first hour of Serbia’s 1-1 draw in Bulgaria, as their unbeaten start to Euro 2024 qualifying continued.
