Fulham FC Foundation’s Refugee Kicks programme recently worked with the charitable project “I Speak Football” throughout March and April.
The project was delivered to young refugees and asylum seekers aged 16 and above in South London, and is designed to help them improve their language and communication skills through the medium of football.
The project consisted of two weekly sessions at a community hub in Vauxhall delivered to a new cohort of Refugee Kicks participants.
The first half of each two-hour long session was spent in a classroom playing sports-based language games and activities. This was a great chance for the participants to build their confidence and social networks.
The second half of the session was then spent outside together enjoying a game of fun but competitive football!
“The project is a great way of bringing people from different backgrounds together. Whatever your footballing background and experience, people are able to come together to build their social networks and confidence through playing the game.” - Jonnie Langtree, Youth Engagement Officer, Fulham FC Foundation
