Fulham FC Foundation is delighted to be working in collaboration with charitable social enterprise, and Official Gym and Leisure Centre of Fulham FC, GLL - who run facilities under the Better brand - to improve the community’s mental health and wellbeing in the London Borough of Merton.
The initiative forms part of the Foundation’s More Than a Game provision, designed to support adults into physical activity and improve their mental wellbeing. With new sessions running from Better’s Canons Leisure Centre, Fulham FC Foundation is bringing football, fitness, and accessible conversations on mental health to the heart of the Merton community.
In a recent survey, 100% of those who engage in More Than A Game Football reported that their physical and mental wellbeing has improved, as well as that, their confidence has increased as a result of attending. Further to this, 83% reported that they have more tools to support their wellbeing because of taking part in the programme.
Paul, a More Than A Game Football participant, shared: “The sessions are something I always look forward to as a chance to do something that I enjoy in playing football. I don’t have to worry about being judged for my abilities, or mental or physical fitness, which I can then improve through these football sessions.”
Ashleigh Wallace at Better’s Canons Leisure Centre said: “As a social enterprise rooted in community health and wellbeing, we are delighted to be working with the More Than A Game Football programme and in partnership with Fulham FC Foundation.
“There is a close alignment with our wish to see happier and healthier communities who are more physically active and boost their social health coming together through a love of sport and exercise.”
More Than A Game Football is funded by the Premier League Charitable Fund and the Professional Footballers Association.
The sessions are open to all adults 18+ who want to improve their wellbeing, and run weekly in Kingston and in Merton.
More Than A Game Football Merton take place every Friday from 1.30-2.30pm at Canons Leisure Centre.
More Than A Game Football Kingston take place every Tuesday from 2-3pm in Kingsmeadow Fitness and Athletics Centre.
