Martial Godo scored his first goal for Wigan Athletic on Saturday afternoon.

The winger received the ball on the left flank and cut inside before drilling a smart low finish inside the far post to give his side the lead at home to Portsmouth.

But Pompey – who top League One – hit back with two goals of their own before half-time, while an early red card for Wigan in the second half made their chances of a comeback all the more difficult.

“I’m buzzing to be honest,” Man of the Match Godo told Latics TV. “All the work I’ve put in on the training ground paid off.

“I took [the goal] really nicely, and I’m really happy to score my first professional goal at the DW Stadium. It was an unfortunate result, but we go again next week.”

Also in League One, Kieron Bowie set up the clinching goal in Northampton Town’s 2-0 win at Exeter City, while Terry Ablade come on for the final 12 minutes of Carlisle United’s defeat at Wycombe Wanderers by the same scoreline.

In the Championship, Jay Stansfield played the entirety of Birmingham City’s trip to Norwich City, drawing a fine save from Angus Gunn while the score was goalless.

Quickfire strikes after that from Gabriel Sara and Jon Rowe ended up securing the win for the Canaries, but City almost pulled one back when Stansfield set up Koji Miyoshi, who hit the bar.

In the National League, Olly Sanderson came on for Oxford City, but was unable to prevent them from going down 2-1 at home to Altrincham, while Ibane Bowat helped TSV Hartberg keep a clean sheet in their Austrian Bundesliga stalemate with Altach.

Elsewhere in Europe, Kevin Mbabu played the full 90 as Augsburg were defeated 2-0 in Freiburg.
