By Fulham FC

Fulham’s Premier League Kicks programme provides free football sessions, competitions, qualifications, training, education and targeted mentoring support. As part of Kicks, Fulham FC Foundation run a 1:1 and group mentoring programme for young people who take part in a regular Kicks session, aiming to engage and talk about life skills such as positive communication, resilience, and empathy.

Premier League Kicks, funded by the Premier League through the Premier League Charitable Fund, uses the power of football and sport to inspire young people to reach their potential, in some of the most high-need areas in England and Wales.

Kicks 1:1 mentoring runs for a minimum of 10 weeks before regular reviews take place to assess a young person's need for their mentor. Kicks Group Mentoring runs for a consecutive 6-8 weeks at Kicks sessions across South-West London for a maximum of four participants, one hour before the mainstream Kicks session.

Kicks mentoring

Across the past 12 months, Fulham FC Foundation have engaged with 18 participants in a variety of 1:1 and group settings. All participants reported that after participating in Kicks mentoring they agreed or strongly agreed that they:

  • Understood their potential more;
  • Understood different communication skills;
  • Understood how to manage emotions better;
  • Had a better relationship with Fulham FC Foundation coaches.

Our mentoring programme also provides a safe space for young people to be able to share honestly with their lead mentor/s. The Fulham Kicks team provides positive mentor role models to speak and help provide self-reflection for our Kicks participants.

Kicks mentoring

"Thank you so much, I as a parent really appreciate the time you have given for mentoring sessions. I know if it's carried on it will be extremely beneficial." – Sue, Parent of a Kicks Group Mentoring participant

"Our mentoring programme enables our participants to build a trusted relationship with a Kicks mentor. This helps provide young people with a safe space to discuss any issues of concern whilst being provided with the tools to learn to self-reflect. Fulham Kicks wants to be able to help those where life, right now, is a challenge."  - Jack Roberts, Youth Engagement Officer, Fulham FC Foundation
