Our Under-21s will be looking to continue our winning start to the season as we make the trip to Walsall on Tuesday in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.

It’s been a tremendous start to the campaign for our Young Whites with three wins from three – and our BSM Trophy opener was certainly a memorable one.

The state of play

We top our group after the first round of fixtures, with Lemar Gordon’s last-gasp goal giving us a 2-1 win at Shrewsbury Town last month.

How things stand in our Bristol Street Motors Trophy group

Toto Nsiala’s goal had given Salop an early second half lead before we staged a hearty fightback with strikes from Callum Osmand and Gordon giving us three points.

Our Young Whites were the only side in our group to claim maximum points from the opening round of fixtures, with Birmingham City and Walsall playing out a 1-1 draw, although the Saddlers took a bonus point following a penalty shootout win.

A look at Walsall

The only League Two opposition in our group, the Saddlers have begun the new season in fine form across all competitions.

Wins against Morecambe, Swindon Town, Cheltenham Town and Bradford City have seen Walsall spend the early weeks of the League Two season in the top seven, while an impressive comeback victory against Huddersfield Town in the Carabao Cup set up a second round clash with Leicester City.

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler looks on

In their BSM Trophy opener, Walsall defeated Birmingham City on penalties in front of a crowd of nearly 10,000 at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park. Mat Sadler’s side were only denied a win in normal time by a late Christoph Klarer equaliser but converted four of their five penalties to win the shootout.

The Saddlers were busy in the summer, looking to build on their positive end to last season, where they sustained near Play-Off for the final 20 matches of the League Two campaign.

Isaac Hutchinson was a notable departure, with the creative midfielder jumping up a division to join Bristol Rovers after recording 23 goals contributions in 46 games for the Saddlers last season.

Charlie Lakin, fresh off an impactful loan spell with Sutton United, was among those drafted in to replace the creative burden Hutchinson left; while the experienced Albert Adomah and a trio of signings from Stoke City – England U20s goalkeeper Tommy Simkin, returning defender David Okagbue and teenage striker Nathan Lowe – have all been heavily involved since joining.
