Josh King scored England’s first goal in their remarkable 5-5 draw with Germany at the Under-19 European Championship on Tuesday.

The Young Lions were trailing 2-0 when King halved the deficit, controlling a bouncing cross from the left on his chest before rifling in a fine volley.

It looked as though that would prove to be just a consolation when the Germans netted three times in the seven minutes either side of half-time to storm into a 5-1 lead, but the subsequent response was phenomenal.

Ethan Wheatley, Reiss Russell-Denny, Zach Abbott and Jesse Derry all scored in a mad 12 minute period to earn England a deserved point, with King playing 77 minutes of the contest.

The result means qualification remains in the Young Lions’ hands, as they prepare to face group winners the Netherlands on Friday.

In the Gold Cup, Luc De Fougerolles helped Canada to a clean sheet and comprehensive win as they kicked off their campaign with a statement-making 6-0 victory over Honduras.

De Fougerolles started at centre-back and played 63 minutes, by which point his side were three goals to the good thanks to efforts from Niko Sigur, Tani Oluwaseyi and Tajon Buchanan.

Buchanan, Promise David and Nathan-Dylan Saliba added more gloss to the scoreline, putting Canada in a strong position to progress after the other game finished goalless between Curacao and El Salvador.
