Canada qualified for the Quarter-Finals of the Gold Cup after beating El Salvador 2-0 in Houston on Wednesday morning.

Luc De Fougerolles started as Canada claimed top spot in the group, qualifying with seven points from three games.

Two huge chances went begging in a first-half of frustration for Canada as Promise David failed to hit the target with a close-range header, while Jonathan David saw a penalty saved by Mario González.

But El Salvador were reduced to nine-men late into the first period, allowing Jesse Marsch’s side to take full control within 10 minutes of the second-half, as goals from Jonathan David and Tajon Buchanan helped set up a Quarter-Final tie against Guatemala on Sunday.

Luc – who featured in all three of Canada’s group matches – played 77 minutes of the tie before being replaced by Bristol City’s Jamie Knight-Lebel.
