Fulham fell to their second defeat of the week in a 1-0 loss at Motspur Park on Friday evening.

Fulham’s Under-23s fell to their second defeat of the week as they lost 1-0 at home to Blackburn Rovers. Lewis Mansell scored the only goal after a back pass from Tayo Edun went array.

Peter Grant’s side came into this fixture looking to bounce back from their first defeat in the league in 10 matches after they suffered a late 2-1 defeat away at West Brom.

It was a promising start for the Whites, the first attack of the match came from Fulham in the fifth minute, both teams were fighting to control possession and Fulham were coming out on top in the early periods.

Michael Elstone beat his man on the inside of the box and got caught between shooting and crossing to Isaac Pearce who was waiting at the back post.

Three minutes later the striker had another chance, Edun skipped past a defender centrally and slotted a ball to Elstone, he shot first time with his left, forcing a save from Andrew Fisher.

Rob Atkinson had a golden chance 10 minutes into the tie, Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson curled a corner into the box, the big centre forward rose under no pressure, but skied his header over the bar.

It was Blackburn that made the breakthrough 21 minutes into the game. Fulham had been dominating chances created, and it was a rare mistake from Edun that led to the goal.

He passed backwards towards Luca Ashby-Hammond, but Mansell was close by and latched onto the ball and slotted for the bottom left corner.

Fulham almost had their equaliser four minutes later. Jayden Harris won a free kick by excellently picking a midfielder’s pocket and subsequently being fouled 40-yards from goal.

Marlon Fossey curled the free-kick towards the back-post, and Aron Davies in acres of space took a touch before firing at the near post which was blocked by Fisher.

Davies kept the deficit to 1 with five minutes left of the first half, Daniel Buttersworth cut inside 8 yards from goal and fired, but the Welshman read it well and made the block.

Ashby-Hammond was far busier in the opening of the second half, he made a fantastic diving save four minutes in, pushing Joseph Rankin-Costello’s effort wide of the left post.

Shortly after, he was called into action again dropping low quickly to block a 15-yards effort from Buttersworth.

With 10 minutes left on the clock the Whites had one more brilliant chance. Thorsteinsson pinged an exquisite cross field pass to Tyrese Francois, the Australian curled a ball in towards Elstone, but the forward headed inches wide of the left post.

Late on Thorsteinsson attempted to get some space down the left so he could cut in on his right and curl for the top corner, but good pressure from the Blackburn defence kept him at bay.

Blackburn were able to see out the remainder of the game.
