Biereth Shines In Final PL Cup Game

Sunday 24 November 2019 17:05

Main Action:

The Under-18s bowed out of the PL Cup despite recording a resounding four-goal victory over Sunderland on Saturday morning.

Four different scorers included all four forwards as Jean-Pierre Tiehi, Jay Stansfield, Terry Abalde and Mika Biereth each helped themselves to a goal.

With our Under-18s flying high in the league, the hosts were experiencing a contrasting fortune at the bottom of the Premier League North. The lads imposed their classy style from the outset.

The Black Cats did have the chance to take the lead early on after a defensive mix-up but for the alert Damian Las who tipped the ball expertly wide.

This season, taking opportunities is crucial against this free-scoring bunch and it was Tiehi who personified this. Biereth forced a save which was parried into the path of the striker who slid a strike into the corner.

Tiehi almost doubled his tally as Biereth pulled a ball back into the six-yard box that was air kicked by the forward.

The howling winds and torrential rain threatened to half any slick passing moves which hindered both sides. Biereth capitalised on uncertainty as he raced towards goal and was scythed down. Talisman Jay Stansfield stepped up to slam home and double the advantage.

Speedster Ablade was introduced on the hour onto a tiring Sunderland defence. It only took the forward six minutes to find his goal. Idris Odutayo looped in a cross that hit Biereth and fell to Ablade who had a simple task.

Biereth had tirelessly persisted throughout and his excellent performance was rewarded with a goal. Ollie O’Neill whipped a cross which the forward needed to crank his neck backwards to cushion a header into the corner.

What That Means:

Despite the impressive result, the boys bow out of the PL Cup. Norwich overcame Everton in the other game in the group meaning it’s Norwich that progress. The Under-18s finished in third.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Jean-Pierre Tiehi notched up his second goal in as many games in the PL Cup.
  • Mika Biereth played a role in each of the four goals following his reinstatement into the starting 11.
  • Terry Ablade continued his rich vein of form by registering his fourth goal in five games.
